FOR a century, the Queensland Country Women’s Association’s Ipswich branch has quietly stitched itself into the fabric of the community, proving there is far more to the organisation than scones, sewing and afternoon tea.

QCWA Ipswich president Leann Dakin said members were immensely proud to celebrate such a significant milestone.

“Branch members feel very proud to belong to an association that has stood the test of time, and reaching 100 years in any organisation is an achievement in itself,” Ms Dakin said.

“Being able to continue the legacy of the women who have come before us and still be achieving their goals of supporting the community is our main aim.”

When the Ipswich branch was established in 1926, its purpose reflected the needs of the day. It provided country women travelling to the city with a safe place to rest, care for their children and find accommodation while working or awaiting the birth of their babies.

“The branch was established to provide a venue where, when women came from the country, they had a rest room,” Ms Dakin said.

“Somewhere they could have a break and have their children in a safe place to rest.”

Over the decades, those needs have evolved, but the spirit of service has remained unchanged.

“The role of supporting the community is still our focus and providing a safe place for women to come together and enjoy each other’s company regardless of their background,” Ms Dakin said.

Like many volunteer organisations, the QCWA has adapted to changing times but volunteers remain the heart of the organisation.

Looking to the future, Ms Dakin said attracting younger members would be vital to ensuring the organisation survived for another century.

To mark the 100 year milestone for QCWA Ipswich, there is a Devonshire Tea session at Meals on Wheels Rooms at 9 South St, Ipswich running from 2-4pm on August 8, with bookings on 0439745063.
