FOR generations, the sight of the Big Top rolling into town has stirred excitement for families, and Ashton Circus’s Chantel Ashton-Rodriquez said that sense of wonder is just as strong today as it has ever been.
Returning to Ipswich later this month from August 21-30, the family-run circus promises a production packed with breathtaking aerial acts, comedy, juggling and its spectacular Globe Riders finale, while continuing a legacy that has entertained Australians for generations.
“We love what we do, and I think that helps,” Ms Ashton-Rodriquez, a sixth-generation circus performer said.
“We’re proud of the legacy that we get to carry on. We’ve put together a show that can be enjoyed whether you’re two years old or 92 years old.
“It’s something the whole family can experience together. It’s not behind a screen – it’s getting families out into the live atmosphere of the circus.”
That family atmosphere extends well beyond the performers in the ring, with the Ashton Circus family spending almost the entire year touring Australia, with just four to six weeks off over Christmas before heading back on the road.
Planning a national tour is a massive undertaking, with routes often mapped out months in advance before being adjusted around major events and venue availability.
“We try to plan as far ahead as possible because there’s a lot of preparation,” Ms Ashton-Rodriquez said.
While circus life has changed significantly over the decades, Ms Ashton-Rodriquez said most Australians understand what a modern circus represents.
“Most people know what real circus is,” she said.
“They know it’s a great family night out and great entertainment that everyone can enjoy.”
For first-time visitors, she promises a production filled with something for everyone.
“We’ve got stunning dancers, amazing aerial performers, contortionists, Cyr wheel work and plenty of comedy,” she said. “We also have the Globe Riders from South America for our big finale. It’s an incredible stunt that audiences absolutely love.”
The Ipswich season will also help support an important cause, coinciding with Red Nose Day, Ashton Circus will donate $1 from every ticket sold during its opening weekend performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to Red Nose Australia.
