IF you take a walk along the top floor of Redbank Plaza any Wednesday morning you can’t help but notice a big group of women busily crocheting away.
They have been occupying the Street Art Room doing just this for more than 12 months.
The big change for them has been their numbers.
When they started out there were just six, now they there is 85 members in their “Craft for a Purpose” team and each week at least 35 show up.
Susan Moldrich and Anne Turnbull are two of the originals and they are chuffed at how popular their craft group has become.
“While we all enjoy our crochet work, it’s just as much about having a social get-together,” Anne said.
“In recent months we have made hundreds of crocheted blankets, scarves and beanies and donated them to the needy through the Ipswich Salvation Army Centre, and we have many more coming,” she said.
The Plaza supports the group by making the room available and with the sponsorship of the Donut King provides a coffee and donut to everyone that turns up.
The group are currently working on crocheting elements to add to a Christmas display which will be showcased at the Plaza again this year.
The display includes possibly the only crocheted Christmas Tree in the country.
To help with their projects they have asked anyone who’d like to drop off and donate some yarn to just call in any Wednesday.
