FROM first-time gymgoers to seasoned fitness enthusiasts, getting active is not about lifting the heaviest weights or running the fastest kilometres, but about finding a routine that works for you, whatever your age, ability or fitness level.

Walk into almost any gym and you will find people chasing very different goals, from building muscle and improving endurance to losing weight, recovering strength or simply feeling healthier in their everyday lives.

For some, it is the satisfaction of pushing through another demanding workout, while for others, the greatest achievement might be stepping through the doors for the first time.

Regardless of where someone begins, the message behind modern fitness is becoming increasingly clear: there is no single definition of being fit, and there certainly is no one-size-fits-all approach to getting there.

With Australians juggling busy work schedules, family commitments and the demands of everyday life, finding time to exercise can feel like another challenge on an already crowded calendar. Yet gym sessions do not have to involve hours of exhausting workouts to make a meaningful difference.

Whether it is a 20-minute walk on the treadmill, a gentle strength session or a high-intensity circuit, every movement contributes towards better physical and mental wellbeing.

For beginners, the gym can initially be an intimidating environment. Rows of unfamiliar equipment, experienced weightlifters and fast-paced group classes can make starting a fitness journey seem daunting, particularly for those who have spent years away from regular exercise.

However, building confidence often begins with something as simple as learning how to use a few machines, establishing a comfortable routine and understanding that progress is measured against personal goals rather than the achievements of others.

Starting with two or three manageable sessions each week can provide a foundation for developing consistency, while gradually introducing resistance training, cardiovascular exercise and flexibility work helps create a balanced approach to fitness.

Importantly, lifting weights is not reserved for bodybuilders or elite athletes. Strength training can benefit people of all ages by improving muscle strength, supporting bone health, maintaining mobility and making everyday activities easier.

For older Australians, these benefits can be particularly valuable, with appropriately designed resistance exercises helping maintain independence, improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.

The beauty of a well-designed gym program is its flexibility, allowing exercises to be modified according to an individual’s experience, physical capacity and personal ambitions.

From low-impact movement classes and Pilates-inspired workouts to circuit training, indoor cycling and strength-based sessions, there are options catering to different interests and abilities.

For many participants, the social connections formed during these classes become just as important as the physical benefits.

That sense of belonging can be especially important for those returning to exercise after injury, illness or a prolonged period of inactivity, when rebuilding confidence may take just as much patience as rebuilding strength.

The mental health benefits of regular physical activity should not be overlooked either, with exercise recognised for its ability to improve mood, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, support better sleep and provide a welcome break.

Ultimately, the best gym session is not necessarily the hardest, longest or most exhausting. It is the one that suits your ability, supports your goals and encourages you to return.
