IPSWICH’S push to return to 10 single-councillor divisions has taken a formal step forward, with Local Government Minister Ann Leahy referring the city’s electoral arrangements to the Local Government Change Commission.

The referral follows Ipswich City Council’s September 24 resolution supporting consideration of the proposed model for the 2028 local government elections.

Responding to a question on notice from State Member for Bundamba Lance McCallum, Ms Leahy confirmed the referral but said any changes would depend on the independent review.

“In light of the Council’s request, I have referred the matter of Ipswich City Council’s electoral arrangements to the Change Commission for assessment in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009,” Ms Leahy said.

Mr McCallum had asked whether the State Government was planning, or intended, to move Ipswich to single-councillor divisions before voters next head to the polls in 2028.

Ms Leahy said the Change Commission would assess whether a proposed change was in the public interest, with its review to include any community consultation it considered appropriate.
