HE COULDN’T take the field because of injury, but Ipswich cricketer Antony Mathew delivered the most important performance of his life when a fellow player collapsed during a match at Limestone Park last Saturday.
While others scrambled to call an ambulance, Antony rushed to the stricken player’s side and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
His quick thinking and willingness to act during the frightening emergency have since earned him widespread praise, with the player reportedly safe and recovering well.
A member of the Ipswich Challengers Cricket Club, Antony had been forced onto the sidelines by a workplace injury but remained determined to support his teammates.
Ipswich Malayali Association president Sreejith Krishan said the community was immensely proud of Antony’s courage and compassion.
“We are incredibly proud of our active Ipswich Malayali Association member, Antony Mathew, for his courageous and timely response in helping save a life,” Mr Krishan said.
Originally from Kannur district in Kerala, India, Antony moved to Australia around 2012 and has since established himself as an active member of Ipswich’s growing Malayali community.
Ipswich Councillor Pye Augustine praised Antony’s composure during the emergency, saying his actions demonstrated the importance of community members being prepared to help in a crisis.
“His quick thinking, calm response and willingness to help played an important role in managing the emergency,” Cr Augustine said.
“We are very relieved to hear that the person is safe and recovering well.”
The incident also highlights the potentially life-saving importance of CPR knowledge, particularly in community sporting environments where medical emergencies can unfold without any warning.
