TENNIS is a sport that can be played at any age from the young right up to the elderly.

Recently the Ipswich Veteran’s Tennis Association celebrated its 40th anniversary with a luncheon at the Alder Tennis Centre at Leichhardt.

Association Vice President Darryl Brumpton was delighted with the big turn and enjoyed talking about their memories over the past four decades since the first ball was hit in 1982.

“We are proud of how over the years we have provided a competitive and social environment for the older members in the community to play tennis at a reasonable price,” he said.

“The first committee members from 1982 were in attendance and the stories from the early days just don’t seem to get old when we get together.

“They also had the honour of cutting a celebratory cake to mark the occasion.

Several of them still looked as fit as they did right back in 1982 when all the fun began.”

Current player Mal Nienhuis, who only recently joined the group, said he played tennis for a little bit of fitness but more importantly the chance to have a laugh and a chat.

“While winning is good its more about just keeping the body moving and having a laugh with friends after you walk off the court,” he said.

The association is always looking for more players and anyone who is interested in playing can contact the club secretary on 0409 068 865 for more details
