TENNIS legend and Springfield mother Ash Barty has chosen a unique way to honour her achievements – by creating a legacy that families can enjoy for years to come.
Instead of a traditional statue, Barty has unveiled the Ash Barty Playground in Springfield, a vibrant new space designed with fun, activity and community in mind.
The playground offers a dynamic environment for children and families to come together and play.
It’s testament to Barty’s commitment to giving back to the community and ensuring that future generations have a place to enjoy the outdoors and stay active.
“I have always loved my home and being part of the Springfield community,” Barty said.
“This playground is really special to me because it’s something my family, and so many other families, can enjoy together.”
Designed in collaboration with the Barty family, the playground features a tennis- inspired halfcourt and rebound wall with a painted-on net, so kids can practise just like Barty did when she was growing up nearby.
From above, the looping pathways even resemble a giant tennis ball – a nod to her incredible sporting journey.
The space isn’t just about sport – it’s designed to bring families together.
The expanded playground includes a dry creek bed, nature play equipment, shaded seating areas, and a walking path with storytelling stops along the way.
Barty, who recently became a mum to son Hayden, said the park reflected her values.
“Encouraging kids to be active and play is something I’m really passionate about,” she said.
“I can’t wait to bring my own little boy here, and I hope local families love it as much as we do.”
The $525,000 project was delivered by the State Government in partnership with Ipswich City Council and Springfield City Group.
Minister for Sport, Tim Mander, praised the tennis legend’s choice to give back to her hometown.
“As a professional athlete, Ash was always remarkably humble and never lost sight of where she came from,” he said.
“Instead of a statue, she wanted something children and families could enjoy.
“That says a lot about who she is.”
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the playground would inspire future generations through its association with such a well-loved local champion.
