THE section of the Brisbane Street footpath from the top of the Nicholas Street Precinct to Ellenborough Street was closed off last week and will remain shut for six months.

The closure was needed so major refurbishment of the former cinema site could proceed.

Council did say, however, that every effort would be made to partially reopen the footpath earlier, to allow pedestrians safe access.

Ipswich Cr Marnie Doyle said the footpath closure was necessary for the continued work ahead of major cinema chain Hoyts joining the Nicholas Street Precinct, and to ensure the safety of pedestrians moving about the CBD.

“Pedestrians will be detoured to the south side of Brisbane Street while the work is in progress,” Cr Doyle said.

“A traffic controller will be in place on Ellenborough Street to assist pedestrians in moving through the area.”

The closure will affect several car parks, a loading zone, and an accessible car park on the northern side of Brisbane Street.
