EMPLOYERS are beginning to build their workforces for the busy Christmas and New Year period, opening opportunities for students, parents, retirees and workers looking to supplement their regular income.

And with household budgets under pressure, local jobseekers say the chance to pick up extra hours over Christmas could make a significant difference.

Springfield Lakes university student Emily Clinton, 21, said she was looking for extra work during the Christmas break to help cover everyday expenses and save for the year ahead.

“Everything costs more now, so having a few extra shifts over Christmas would definitely help,” she said.

While retail stores and restaurants have traditionally dominated Christmas hiring, seasonal jobs are increasingly available across a much broader range of industries.

For households feeling the pressure of rising everyday expenses, a seasonal job can also provide a timely boost to the family budget.

Ipswich small business owner Mark Tompkins said employers often needed to start recruiting well before December to ensure new staff were trained before the busiest weeks arrived.

“You don’t want to be trying to train somebody when you’re right in the middle of the Christmas rush,” he said.
