FROM one-take recordings to packed local gigs, Damien J. Johnson says the city’s music scene is finding its voice.

Johnson has never been a musician who fits neatly into one genre.

Over the years, the Ipswich singer- songwriter has explored country, blues, roots and Americana, continually evolving his sound while staying true to one guiding principle – authenticity.

That philosophy is front and centre on his latest single, I Don’t Listen To The Radio, released last week as the third and final preview of the forthcoming debut album from The Damien J. Johnson Band.

Recorded in Ipswich, the track was captured live in the studio in a single take, with the full band performing together without a click track.

Apart from minimal overdubs, the recording preserves the natural chemistry, spontaneity and imperfections that come from musicians playing together in real time.

“It’s about capturing what a real band sounds like,” Johnson said.

The single follows earlier release Lappin’, which gained traction on streaming playlists, and Wacol Station, showcasing the band’s blend of country, bluegrass and blues influences.

Johnson is equally passionate about helping Ipswich’s live music scene continue to grow and believes the city is in a strong position thanks to venues such as The Rusty Nail, Stony Creek Brewing and The Link at Riverlink, which are increasingly providing opportunities for local performers.

“They’re actively looking to showcase Ipswich artists before looking elsewhere,” he said.

For Johnson, supporting live music extends well beyond buying a ticket.

“It’s good for the soul,” he said.

“Live music creates a sense of community, a sense of reality and groundedness.”

Johnson will perform solo at Stony Creek Brewing from 6-9pm this Saturday, before returning to The Link at Riverlink on August 15 from 4-8pm.
