WHEN Diesel Darling steps onto a stage, audiences quickly learn to expect the unexpected with the self-described “original Danger Barbie” set to bring her unique blend of burlesque, sideshow and high-octane femininity to the Ipswich Circus Festival’s adults-only gala on July 10, delivering a performance she promises will be equal parts glamour, power and controlled chaos.

“I’ll give you glam. I’ll give you ultra- femme,” she laughed.

“But I’m also from Broken Hill. I was driving a four-wheel drive when I was 12 years old, I own more power tools than most men I know, and I try to incorporate that into my acts.”

That fusion of femininity and toughness has become Diesel’s trademark as an award-winning performer, costume designer and prop builder, she has built a national reputation for performances featuring everything from angle grinders and fire to sword swallowing, giant champagne glasses and giant snakes.

Her creativity has earned industry recognition, including being crowned Miss Burlesque Australia and induction into the prestigious Burlesque Hall of Fame.

Yet despite the accolades, Diesel believes one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding burlesque remains.

“People often think it’s for men, but the reality is most of the audience is women,” she said.

“It celebrates female expression and empowerment. Women come because they want to see confidence, creativity and self-expression from a female perspective.”

Having taught burlesque classes for years, Diesel has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact performance can have.

“It becomes a community where women support each other and help each other grow,” she said.

Audiences attending the festival’s adults-only gala can expect plenty of Diesel Darling’s signature energy, although she’s keeping the finer details under wraps.
