THE Redcliffe Dolphins have claimed the Hostplus Cup premiership with a hard-fought 28-18 victory over the Sunshine Coast Falcons, finishing their season on the biggest stage.
The Dolphins produced a strong performance when it mattered most, holding their nerve against a determined Falcons outfit. Sunshine Coast took an early lead, but Redcliffe’s attacking class and ability to control the important moments ultimately proved the difference.
For the Dolphins, it was a memorable way to finish a successful Hostplus Cup campaign and another piece of silverware for one of Queensland rugby league’s powerhouse clubs.
Let’s hope that next year it’s the Ipswich Jets lifting the trophy.
Attention then turned to the NRL, where two impressive preliminary-final victories have set up a massive Grand Final clash this Sunday.
The Sydney Roosters delivered a dominant performance against the Dolphins, running out 36-20 winners in a game where the Roosters’ attack eventually proved too much for Redcliffe.
The Dolphins battled hard throughout the contest, but the Roosters found another gear as the match progressed and booked their place in the biggest game of the season.
In the other preliminary final, in one of the biggest upsets of the NRL season, the Newcastle Knights stunned the Penrith Panthers 22-14 to book their place in the Grand Final.
With the Panthers throwing everything at them, a 12-man Newcastle somehow found the courage and determination to repel attack after attack and refused to crack when it mattered most and held on for a famous victory.
The only sour note was a serious ankle injury to Panthers champion Nathan Cleary, who was since had surgery.
The weekend results now leave the Roosters and Knights preparing for a huge showdown this Sunday.
After a season of twists, turns and pressure-filled finals football, everything now comes down to one game.
The Roosters will be looking to carry the momentum from their win over the Dolphins, while the Knights will be banking on anither defensive masterclass.
One Premiership. One massive Sunday.
The Grand Final promises to be a fitting finale to a thrilling finals series.
