GOUT Gout is fast becoming a name to be feared by other athletes who line up to challenge the 16-year-old on the running track. He turns 17 later this month.
Born in Australia to Sudanese parents, Gout attends Ipswich Grammar School and set the sporting world on fire with his blistering speed at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships held at Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre last week.
Days after he ran fifth-fastest by an Australian in the under 18 100m heats, he broke Australia’s longstanding 200m men’s record in a time of 20.04 seconds. The previous best time of 20.06 seconds was set by Peter Norman 56 years ago.
World Athletics said Gout was now the fastest 16-year-old in history over 200m, holds the second fastest under 18 200m time ever, and now holds the new Oceania 200m record.
Athletics Australia reported Gout delivered the performance of a lifetime as he stormed down the straight to claim the under 18 school title and ink his name as a legend of the sport.
Coached by the amazing Diane Sheppard, Gout now holds the second-fastest time in history for athletes under the age of 18, overtaking Usain Bolt’s 20.13 and finishing behind Erriyon Knighton’s (USA) time of 19.84 from 2021.
“My video went viral right before World Juniors and that already created pressure. But you know what they say, pressure makes diamonds and I guess I’m better than a diamond right now,” Gout said.
He can rightfully be proud of this magnificent achievement.
