LOCAL concerns the $50m Ipswich based greyhound project under construction at Purga would be named the Brisbane Greyhound Centre have been alleviated with the announcement it will now be called “The Q”.
Local greyhound officials were concerned that the previous name of the three track project gave it no local identity.
In a nod to the industry’s past, the broader precinct at The Q, incorporating the gardens, walkways and community facilities, will be known as Parklands.
Racing Minister Grace Grace said the new world-class three track venue had been designed with state-of-the-art features that enhance animal welfare and racing safety.
“From next year – The Q – with its unique name, will become synonymous with greyhound racing in the Sunshine State.”
Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club President Rob Essex said the collaboration between Racing Queensland, Bris Greys and Ipswich to arrive at The Q was pleasing.
“It’s been a diligent process, and with audiences from across the globe set to tune in to races from The Q, we look forward to them recognising and enjoying Queensland greyhound racing.”
With civil works having recently commenced, Racing Queensland Chair Steve Wilson said a new era for the Queensland greyhound industry will be ushered in next year when The Q hosts its first meeting.
“We undertook an extensive process to develop the branding territories, and throughout this process, we have endeavoured to pay homage to the past through the Parklands moniker for the broader precinct and the two-turn track, whilst looking to the future courtesy of The Q,” he said.
“We want the precinct to be more than just another racing venue.
“We want it to be a place where the community feels at home and is proud to visit. A beautiful park for all dog lovers to enjoy.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime project we are delivering, and it will be enjoyed by generations to come.”
The gold pallet has been selected to position the brand as the pinnacle of Queensland greyhound racing including the $1 million Brisbane Cup.
The Q will replace the current greyhound tracks at Albion Park and Ipswich.
The track names will be known as Q1 Lakeside, Q1 Parklands and Q1 Straight.
Major earthwork has already been undertaken at the site.
