POLICE are continuing their investigation into the recent threats against Cr Nicole Jonic.

The intimidation involves burnt black feathers sent to Jonic over the past year and also an anonymous letter sent to the press and other councillors revealing Jonic appeared in court more than 11 years ago on a minor charge.

Jonic is convinced the two are linked and could be politically motivated.

Associate Professor Andrew Hemming from the UniSQ’s School of Law and Justice said the person who wrote the letters regarding Jonic’s court appearance needed to have specific background information.

“They would have needed her name at the time of the court appearance, a close idea of the date and the name of the court in which she appeared,” he said.

According to Professor Hemming without that specific information the details would have been extremely difficult to obtain.

He said it did serve as a notice to anyone wanting to stand for public office.

“If you have a skeleton in your closet once you are elected there is every chance it will be revealed.”

He also confirmed that Cr Jonic was under no obligation to reveal her court appearance prior to seeking election, especially as the magistrate recorded no conviction in regards her charge and the time lapsed.
