IPSWICH Jets captain Blake Lenehan is instantly recognisable across the community for his trademark dreadlocks, a style he’s proudly grown for nearly ten years.
Now, he’s preparing to part with his signature look— once the fundraising goal of $10,000 is reached, to support two young local footy players, Lennox and Eli, who were recently injured in a car accident and face long, challenging recoveries.
“I didn’t just want to get rid of them and be done with it,” Lenehan told Local Ipswich News. “It’s easy enough to get a haircut, but I knew this was a big change. I thought it would be a great opportunity to raise some money for a cause that really matters.”
After reaching out to the club, Lenehan discovered the GoFundMe campaign set up for the two boys, who were not only footy players but also attended his high school, Bundamba State High School.
“It seemed like the perfect chance to make a real difference,” he said.
The fundraising haircut will take place after Round 1 of the season, on Sunday, March 8, immediately following the Jets’ home game against the Townsville Blackhawks at Goodna.
“It’ll be my first proper haircut in nine years,” Lenehan said.
For Lenehan, the fundraiser is about more than just hair—it’s about giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his career.
“Ipswich shaped me, from school to local footy. I had the community and my club behind me, helping me through. Now it’s our turn to get behind these young lads and their families, in whatever way we can—whether that’s donating, sharing posts, or just spreading awareness of what they’re going through.”
Every dollar raised will go directly to the families to help cover medical expenses and support during this difficult time.
Adding an extra incentive for generosity, the highest single donor will have the unique opportunity to make the first cut when Lenehan parts with his dreadlocks.
Jets head coach Tye Ingebrigtsen praised Lenehan’s initiative, saying it reflects the leadership and character the club values.
“Blake’s commitment to this cause goes beyond footy. He’s our captain and one of our leaders, and to see him put himself out there like this shows the character we want in this club,” he said.
“Everyone in the squad is right behind him and what this means for the community.”
Ingebrigtsen added that the fundraiser exemplifies the spirit of rugby league and the community.
“Local clubs throughout the city and beyond are supporting the cause. It’s great seeing the community come together like this.”
