THE Ipswich Force are shaping as genuine title contenders in 2026, with veteran floor general Jason Ralph declaring the squad has the depth and firepower to “win the whole thing” as the local product enters his 16th season.
Speaking ahead of the new NBL1 North season, Ralph said the group had built strongly from last year, adding key pieces to address areas that held them back last season.
“We have a really good group this year,” he said. “We’ve built on from last year and added some much-needed pieces that we lacked.”
Among the additions is sharpshooter Lachie Anderson, who Ralph believes will help stretch the floor, while the return of Mitch Poulain and the continued development of Will Mahoney adds further stability.
Now entering his 16th season, Ralph admitted preparation looks different compared to his younger years.
Managing his body has become a central focus after a knee issue and a torn hamstring last season prematurely ended his campaign.
“It’s definitely harder,” he said. “You’ve got work, you’ve got a family. But if you don’t take the time out of your day to look after your body, you won’t be on the court.”
Ralph, who recently became a father, said returning for another season was never in doubt.
“I didn’t want to finish on a pre-season note, tearing my hamstring,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to play while having kids so they can see what that’s about.”
Head Coach Colby Stefanovic said it was an honour and a privilege to have Ralph back.
“His leadership is unmatched and his ability to control a game is second to none. I’m looking forward to going into battle with him again,” Stefanovic said.
The Force are still finalising their roster, with strong speculation linking the club to high-profile talent including Lamar Patterson.
While nothing has been officially announced, Ralph hinted major signings are imminent.
“We’ll have two guys in the top five in scoring in the league, I think,” he said.
“I feel like last year we were a piece short. This year, we’ve got enough.”
The ultimate goal? Hosting the NBL1 Grand Final in Ipswich.
“We should be aiming to host it here. That would be amazing.”
Beyond this season, Ralph also renewed calls for improved facilities, saying basketball’s rapid growth –particularly among girls and young women – demands greater investment.
“Basketball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Australia,” he said.
“It’s not just boys – the girls’ numbers are getting stronger every year.
“We need an indoor stadium that can be used for everything, not just basketball.”
