IPSWICH families looking to keep the kids entertained without breaking the bank are being encouraged to swap crowded holiday attractions for two of the city’s natural treasures.

Harding’s Paddock and Purga Nature Reserve are being promoted as free school holiday destinations, offering walking trails, wildlife, picnic areas and plenty of open space for families wanting to escape outdoors.

Councillor Pye Augustine visited both reserves this week and said they offered very different experiences while showcasing some of Ipswich’s most important natural landscapes.

“Harding’s Paddock and Purga Nature Reserve are two of Ipswich’s quiet achievers – peaceful, scenic and full of character,” Cr Augustine said.

“They’re the perfect places for families to unwind, explore and reconnect with nature these school holidays.”

Located at the foothills of the Flinders-Goolman Conservation Estate, Harding’s Paddock provides a gateway into one of Ipswich’s major conservation areas.

The reserve features shaded picnic areas, bushwalking trails catering for different experience levels and opportunities to spot native wildlife and birdlife.

Cr Augustine said its combination of accessibility and natural surroundings made it particularly well suited to a family day out.

“Harding’s Paddock is one of those places where you instantly feel grounded,” she said.

For families looking for a quieter outing, Purga Nature Reserve offers the chance to explore an environmentally significant pocket of Ipswich bushland.

The reserve protects one of the remaining stands of White Box woodland in Australia and features easy walking tracks, interpretive signage and open bushland suited to photography, wildlife spotting and leisurely exploration.

“Purga Nature Reserve is truly special,” Cr Augustine said.

“It’s a reminder of the landscapes that once covered much of our region.”
