PLANS for a brightly painted road treatment emphasising the scramble crossing at one of the city’s main intersections have been met with an angry response from residents.
Work on the new scramble crossing at the intersection of Brisbane and Ellenborough Streets in Ipswich Central is scheduled to start on November 16 and be completed by November 21.
Mayor Teresa Harding posted the colourful, geometric design on her social media page on Monday, attracting a barrage of comments criticising the idea.
More than 560 residents left comments on the Mayor’s post, with many saying the crossing design was confusing, an eyesore, resembled a children’s playground, was unsympathetic to the heritage streetscape at the Top of Town, would create a slippery surface for motorcycles and questioned whether it met regulations.
Work on the painted treatment was notified in a post dated October 24 on the Council’s Shape Your Ipswich website.
Cr Harding said the scramble crossing was designed to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the visual appeal of the intersection.
“The painted design will help visually define the pedestrian zone, improve connections, and make it clearer and safer for both foot traffic and vehicles,” she said.
“It also celebrates Ipswich’s architectural heritage, blending traditional brickwork and arches with modern geometric forms to create a vibrant, engaging public space.”
Partial road closures will be in place during the nighttime works.
