A love of the outdoors has blossomed into a dream career for Ipswich student Andrea Arango, who has secured a gardening position at the renowned Mayfield Gardens after completing her horticulture studies at TAFE Queensland.
Andrea enrolled in a Certificate III in Horticulture at TAFE Queensland’s Ipswich campus, inspired by her passion for plants, gardening and spending time in nature.
With graduation now within reach, she is preparing to relocate to New South Wales to begin work at one of Australia’s most celebrated private gardens.
“I’ve always been interested in the outdoors – gardening, exploring and experimenting with plants,” Andrea said.
“Before studying, I worked as a teacher aide in a special school, and I found myself drawn outside every afternoon.
Being in nature really helped, and that’s when I realised I wanted to pursue it as a career.”
Studying full-time at the Ipswich campus provided hands-on experience and industry-relevant training, helping her develop the practical skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce.
Throughout the course, Andrea gained experience in landscape maintenance, nursery operations, plant propagation and lawn care.
Students also had the opportunity to contribute to revegetation projects across South East Queensland through a partnership with Natura.
Andrea’s opportunity at Mayfield Gardens arose after one of her teachers encouraged students to apply for a position at the nationally recognised destination.
Following a successful practical trial, she was offered a role and supported to complete her studies before commencing full-time employment.
TAFE Queensland General Manager for the South West Region, Kate Venables, said Andrea’s success demonstrated the value of vocational education and strong industry partnerships.
“Stories like Andrea’s show how hands-on training and strong industry connections can open doors to real jobs,” Ms Venables said.
“At our Ipswich campus, students learn practical skills that employers value while gaining the confidence to take the next step in their careers.”
