THE city is set for a blockbuster winter as Ipswich City Council throws its support behind two of the city’s most iconic events – the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 and the Ipswich Cup.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said Council’s endorsement of up to $50,000 in funding for the Supercars event and $25,000 for the Ipswich Cup was a major win for the city’s tourism, events and hospitality sectors.
“Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440 and Ipswich Cup highlight Ipswich’s status as a major events city,” Mayor Harding said.
“Last year’s return of Supercars to Queensland Raceway for the first time since 2019 was a triumph, bringing a palpable excitement to our city.
“I have no doubt motorsport lovers from Ipswich and beyond will be excited to see Broc Feeney attempt to replicate his dominance at Ipswich when the event returns on 21-23 August.
“The historic Ipswich Cup remains the highest attended event of the Queensland Racing Winter Carnival, and I’m delighted for Council to continue its long-running partnership with the Ipswich Turf Club for the event, to be held on 20 June.
“With half of the 12,700 attendees last year coming from outside Ipswich, the Ipswich Cup strengthens our reputation as a prime destination for unmissable events and experiences.”
Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said both events would deliver significant benefits to the local economy.
“Our $460 million tourism industry, underpinned by two million yearly visits, is a major contributor to the city’s $15 billion economy, and Council is pleased to support its continued growth,” Cr Augustine said.
“As a sport-loving city, Council is determined to foster partnerships that attract high-quality events to Ipswich.
“The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to the Supercars and Ipswich Cup’s benefit.”
