A groundbreaking employment initiative is already changing lives across Ipswich, with local young people securing apprenticeships and job opportunities through the successful launch of the Lay the Way Ipswich program.
Delivered by the Australian Brick and Block Training Foundation (Brick and Block Careers), the four-week program was created to support young people facing barriers to employment by providing practical training, mentoring and direct connections to industry.
Combining accredited learning with hands-on bricklaying experience, work readiness training, site visits and paid work trials, the program gave participants the chance to build confidence while gaining exposure to genuine career pathways within the construction sector.
Eight participants successfully completed the inaugural Ipswich program, with several already transitioning into employment and apprenticeship opportunities. Others are continuing discussions with local employers as they move toward securing long-term work.
The initiative focused on supporting young people from priority groups, including First Nations participants, youth experiencing barriers to employment, and those exiting or at risk of entering the justice system.
Regional Manager Carly Buckland said the program was designed to create lasting outcomes beyond training alone.
“Lay the Way is about creating genuine opportunities and helping young people see a future for themselves within industry,” Ms Buckland said.
“We know many of these young people simply need support, exposure and someone willing to open the door. When industry, community and training providers work together, the outcomes can be incredibly powerful.”
Participants also toured live construction sites and manufacturing facilities, giving them valuable insight into the diverse range of careers available across the building and construction industry.
Brick and Block Careers said the success of Lay the Way highlights the growing importance of practical, industry-led employment initiatives focused on long-term workforce participation and meaningful career outcomes.
The program continues to attract strong backing from employers, community organisations, training providers and government partners, while supporting broader social procurement and workforce participation goals across Queensland.
