GETTING to the athletics track is now easier for everyone, with new accessibility upgrades completed at Limestone Park – helping more people in the Ipswich community take part in the sport, whether as athletes, volunteers, families or spectators.

The upgrades include a new accessible pathway linking Limestone Park’s eastern carpark to the clubhouse at Bill Paterson Oval, along with improved parking and safety features designed to support people with disabilities.

Ipswich City Council Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson and Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the improvements reflect the community’s growing and diverse involvement in athletics.

“Athletics is bringing people together across Ipswich, with families, volunteers and athletes of all abilities sharing in the sport,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“As participation continues to grow – including more athletes with disabilities – it’s important our facilities are welcoming, safe and accessible for everyone.

“These upgrades mean people can arrive, move around and enjoy the facilities with confidence, whether they’re competing, cheering from the sidelines or volunteering.”

The improved carpark now includes dedicated disability parking spaces, clearer line markings, new safety bollards and better stormwater management, while the new pathway meets accessibility standards to support mobility and independence.

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the project was driven by feedback from the local community.

“By improving access, we’re helping remove barriers and making sure more people can enjoy the physical, social and mental health benefits that come with being part of a sporting community,” Cr Doyle said.

Ipswich and District Athletics Club President Vic Pascoe said the improvements would help more people feel welcome and included.

“Our club is proud to support athletes of all abilities, and these upgrades make it easier for everyone to be part of what we do,” Mr Pascoe said.
