LIONS FC have roared to their first Australian Championship victory, defeating Preston Lions 2-1 in a thrilling comeback at Luxury Paints Stadium on Thursday night.
After dominating their opening-round clash against South Hobart but walking away empty-handed, the Queensland champions once again controlled proceedings with 56 per cent possession and a commanding 16-6 advantage in shots.
But for much of the contest, it appeared Lions FC would be left wondering how another dominant performance could slip through their fingers.
Trailing midway through the second half and staring down the barrel of consecutive defeats, the home side produced a stunning late fightback, striking twice in 11 minutes to turn the match on its head and ignite their national championship campaign.
The opening 45 minutes saw a nil-all ledger until the deadlock was broken, with Preston stunning the home crowd by taking the lead in the 49th minute.
As the clock ticked towards the final quarter of the contest, Lions FC continued to press forward, searching desperately for a breakthrough against a Preston side determined to protect its slender advantage.
Their persistence finally paid off in the 73rd minute when the home side found the equaliser, breathing new life into the contest and shifting the momentum firmly in their favour.
Suddenly, the Lions were hunting victory, with Preston hanging on for the draw.
Just 11 minutes later, their determination was rewarded when Lions FC struck again in the 84th minute, sending the home supporters into celebration.
The Lions will next take on Wollongong Wolves at Macedonia Park this Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 2pm.
