LIONS FC dominated possession, peppered the goal and controlled the match, but South Hobart delivered a ruthless lesson in finishing to claim a 2-1 victory at Luxury Paints Stadium in Richlands.
The opening round of the 2026 Australian Championship proved a frustrating introduction to the national competition for the Queensland powerhouse, who entered the contest following a remarkable domestic campaign.
Having claimed the NPL Queensland Premiership, Championship and Queensland Cup, alongside an Australia Cup semi-final appearance, Lions were hoping to carry that winning momentum onto the national stage.
Instead, Tasmania’s champions spoiled the party despite spending much of the contest defending against a relentless Lions attack.
The home side commanded an extraordinary 73 per cent of possession and unleashed 22 shots compared to South Hobart’s four, including 10 attempts on target, but it was the visitors who made their limited opportunities count.
South Hobart struck first in the 28th minute to silence the home crowd and take a 1-0 advantage against the run of play.
Lions responded six minutes later, finding the equaliser in the 34th minute to seemingly swing momentum back in their favour.
However, the celebrations were short lived.
Just a minute later, South Hobart struck again to reclaim the lead, turning a frantic seven-minute period into a decisive 2-1 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Despite dominating the football throughout the second half, Lions were unable to find another breakthrough as the visitors held firm to secure all three points.
The result was particularly frustrating given the statistical dominance of the home side, who controlled territory, created opportunities and dictated the tempo without finding the finishing touch.
Head Coach Dan Barber spoke after the loss: “We are disappointed, that goes without saying. A couple of poor individual defensive errors were costly and we didn’t do enough with the large periods of possession that we had.
“We’ll keep working hard throughout the week to ensure we improve for the Preston game on Thursday.”
There will be little time to dwell on the disappointment, with Lions returning home to Luxury Paints Stadium to host Preston Lions in their next Australian Championship assignment.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6.30pm, with the Queensland outfit even more determined to turn any dominance into a winning result.
