A POLL released by Newspoll unveils a dark forecast for Labor’s hopes of success at the next Federal Election.
The results showed primary support for the Coalition had lifted to 40% for the first time since the 2022 election, and Peter Dutton’s net approval now surpassed that of Anthony Albanese.
Monash University politics expert Zareh Ghazarian said results demonstrated that the Albanese Government was shedding electoral support.
“While the primary vote for both major parties has risen, in the all-important two-party preferred poll, the Coalition has consolidated its lead over Labor,” Dr Ghazarian said.
“Furthermore, voters are seemingly shunning other parties such as the Greens and One Nation.
“With Labor currently enjoying a slim majority in the House of Representatives, the results today suggest that the next election will be very close. The prospect of neither party winning a majority is very real based on these numbers.”
In Blair, Shayne Neumann has held the seat since 2007 and at the last election in 2022 was re-elected off the back of a 4% swing to Labor.
State Member for Ipswich Jennifer Howard said the Federal campaign would be hotly contested in Blair.
“The upcoming Federal election, like all elections, will be hard-fought in Blair,” Ms Howard said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing some strong election commitments in coming months – from both major political parties – to help us manage our unprecedented growth here in Ipswich.”
Newly-elected State Member for Ipswich West Wendy Bourne said the recent election results showed the backing the Labor Party had in the region.
“The most important poll for me was the result in Ipswich West, where Labor won the seat back off the LNP,” she said.
“Federal Member Shayne Neumann has been able to hold the seat of Blair, when the LNP have polled much higher than 40%.
“What I can say is Shayne is a local through and through and works very hard and delivers for our area. I very much look forward to continue working with Shayne for the good of our community.”
