POPCORN is set to launch Ipswich Little Theatre’s 2025 season with a bold and thought-provoking production of Ben Elton’s satirical dark comedy.

Directed by the talented Aaron Evans, the show will run from February 26 to March 16 at the iconic Incinerator Theatre in Queens Park.

For Evans, the opportunity to direct Popcorn is a full- circle moment.

Having joined ILT at age 17 through its young theatricals program, he has cultivated a deep connection with the Ipswich theatre community.

“The space, the people, and the energy of Ipswich Little Theatre have always felt like home,” he said.

Popcorn takes audiences into the glamorous yet violent world of Hollywood during the 1990s Oscar season.

The play follows Bruce Delamitri, a celebrated filmmaker, whose controversial film Ordinary Americans inspires a copycat murder spree.

The perpetrators, Wayne and Scout, take Delamitri hostage, demanding that he take responsibility for their crimes live on television.

“It’s a black comedy, and I love plays that push boundaries but still make you laugh,” Evans said.

Known for his work as both a director and actor, he brings his expertise to the production, guiding a diverse cast that ranges from seasoned performers to up-and-coming local talent.

“The audition process was really exciting,” he said.

“The cast is bringing so much energy and talent to the production, and I’m enjoying working with them.”

Evans promises that audiences will be taken on an unexpected ride.

“Although the premise of the play is outrageous, it’s grounded in important conversations about violence, accountability, and the media’s role in shaping public perception,” he said.

“It’s an experience that will leave people thinking and talking long after the show ends.”

Tickets can be purchased through the Ipswich Little Theatre website or at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre.
