CRICKET and AFL clubs across Ipswich have a major new opportunity on the horizon, with Ipswich City Council calling for expressions of interest to operate a brand-new sports facility in South Ripley.
Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine said the Goolpahjo Harry Thompson Senior Park would be ready to host cricket and AFL matches for the 2026-27 season, with Council now seeking clubs to take up tenancy.
“All interested clubs must submit their expressions of interest through Council’s online system to ensure a consistent and transparent assessment process,” Cr Augustine said.
“The sports-loving residents of Division 1 will be the real winners, with yet another high-quality recreational facility becoming available.
“South Ripley is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Ipswich, so a sporting facility like this is a much-needed addition as our region continues to grow at unprecedented rates.”
Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen said interest from clubs had already been strong.
“We’ve already been contacted by several clubs keen to secure tenure at this brand-new facility,” Cr Madsen said.
“We are calling for expressions of interest to take over this site, which includes an irrigated oval with a turf wicket block, field lighting, four-lane practice nets, an amenities block and car park.
“A facility like this makes sport more accessible to local residents and supports active, healthy lifestyles.
“Ipswich is a sports-mad city that continues to produce more than its fair share of Australian sporting talent. That success is built on strong local clubs and quality facilities like this one.
“We remain committed to delivering high-quality infrastructure and programs that support active communities.”
Expressions of interest close at midnight on 17 May 2026 and can be submitted via Council’s online portal.
