RECENTLY Ipswich City Council announced the city’s population had reached 260,000. It was only 18 months earlier the number was 250,000.
Cost of living and the pressure to build new homes has put rural areas of Ipswich in the residential development spotlight. Ripley Valley is the most obvious recent example after the first sod was turned in October 2012.
Thagoona was earmarked for future housing 20 years ago, so it should come as no surprise this area would eventually succumb to more development.
In October 2023, Council approved the first of a new wave of housing estates in this suburb bordered by Pindari Drive and Dances Rd.
The approval, with conditions added in December 2023, for 359 lots came after an application lodged in December 2022.
There are 110 documents associated with this development including 36 public submissions made in 2023. All submissions expressed similar themes of traffic, tree loss, wildlife and flooding.
Thagoona residents on the southern side of Karrabin Rosewood Rd nearer the rail line would naturally be concerned about potential flooding.
Since 2011 there have been stormwater improvements including that very large open drain next to the main road, built to mitigate overland flows during sustained heavy downpours.
Any calls to delay this new development after lengthy scrutiny by Council, which included the developer addressing flooding and stormwater issues, would only add more costs for young families struggling to build their first home.
