The Commonwealth Hotel in the Nicholas Street precinct seamlessly combines the best of old-world charm with modern sophistication. The beautifully revamped design preserves the elegance and memories of a bygone era while incorporating the convenience of contemporary technology, décor, and impeccable taste. In many ways, this hotel reflects the spirit of modern-day Ipswich—crisp, stylish, and steeped in nostalgia.

The menu mirrors this harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Offering everything from pub classics to refined dishes like pâté and oysters, it caters to diverse palates. Whether you’re in the mood for a traditional chicken parmi or a standout plate of smoked cod, prawn risotto, and dill, the Commonwealth Hotel delivers.

When I visited with work colleagues, we opted for a selection of smaller plates to sample the menu’s variety. Our table quickly filled with Coffin Bay Oysters Kilpatrick, a warm sourdough loaf served with roast chicken butter, and a rich chicken pâté accompanied by chargrilled bread and plum ketchup.

Among the group, we couldn’t resist sharing the pork and fennel sausage roll with tomato kasundi relish.
For the pizza enthusiasts at our table, the Three Cheese Pizza—with smoked mozzarella, cheddar, buffalo mozzarella, and garlic on a white base—was a standout. The rave reviews and empty plates said it all. Mental note: a return visit is in order.

If mains are your preference, the selection is impressive. Imagine half a chargrilled boneless chicken dressed with almond, parsley, lemon, and chili, served alongside grilled broccolini and fried baby potatoes. For vegetarians, the pumpkin gnocchi with roasted pumpkin, smoked feta, pine nuts, and sage is equally enticing. The Grill offers robust options, including Op rib steak, scotch fillet, and rump. Families are also well looked after, with a kid-friendly menu featuring classics like fish and chips to keep the little ones happy.

For dessert, indulge your sweet tooth with the whipped burnt cheesecake mousse served with roasted peaches and a white chocolate crumb. It’s the perfect finish to a memorable experience.

This review offers just a glimpse of what is on offer.

If you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere with understated elegance, — step back into the future, right here at the Commonwealth Hotel.
