AN Ipswich resident and actor has praised the heroic efforts of emergency responders who risked their lives to save him after he suffered a serious medical emergency in the aftermath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

John Tiplady, who experienced a sudden health crisis at his home earlier this month, called for an ambulance, unaware that his street was submerged under several feet of water.

“I had no idea the street was flooded. But these amazing people – SES, Fire and Rescue, Police, and two paramedics – still made it to me,” Mr Tiplady said.

Despite the treacherous conditions, two paramedics reached him, stabilised his condition, and, with the help of other emergency workers, carried him through the floodwaters on a stretcher before floating him to safety in a dinghy.

“They carried me in the pitch black, waded through the water, put me in a boat, and got me to the ambulance. I honestly believe they saved my life,” Mr Tiplady said.

The journey to Ipswich Hospital, which normally takes 15 minutes, was significantly delayed as roads rapidly flooded.

“The paramedics told me we’d be a while because they had to find a safe way through,” Mr Tiplady said.

“But they never wavered – they were calm, professional, and determined.”

After being admitted to hospital, staff provided vital care over the next few days, ensuring his recovery.

“The doctors and nurses at Ipswich Hospital were absolutely incredible. Their tireless work got me back on my feet,” Mr Tiplady said.

Mr Tiplady has appeared in feature films, television shows and theatre but the only role he cares about now is ensuring that emergency workers gain greater recognition, and as such has called for the introduction of a national day of appreciation.

“These people are the true heroes, and they saved my life. We don’t have a national day to honour them, and I believe it’s time we did,” he said.

“They are angels among us, and their dedication and bravery deserve to be celebrated.

“I know that their efforts saved my life on that night.

“If any of my saviours ever want to drop by, the billy will always be on for them.”
