IPSWICH – the festival city. It certainly has a nice ring to it.
I’m sure it was used years ago, but it’s time to bring it back.
Given that Council’s festival calendar now has no fewer than six major events each year, it is a moniker that should be promoted heavily to reinforce how good this city is at hosting or presenting festivals.
This week, SPARK Ipswich is in full swing and from what I’ve seen, residents and tourists are responding in big numbers visiting Nicholas Street, d’Arcy Doyle Place and Ipswich Civic Centre’s carpark parties.
Each festival has its own unique theme or attractions. SPARK Ipswich is billed as a festival of arts and culture.
Now in its fifth year, the original concept of showcasing local creative talent by transforming the city into a huge canvas of light, sound and storytelling still rings true.
Not confined to Ipswich Central, there are other events on the SPARK calendar like Little Day Out for children under 10 this Sunday, July 20 at Ripley Town Centre.
In a relatively short period, SPARK has become a cornerstone of Ipswich’s cultural identity, blending visual arts and music with innovation. It works well along with other local festivals like Galvanized, Festival of Horsepower and CMC Rocks.
It’s time for any naysayers to retreat and allow the city to grow these festivals even further.
