THE world’s toughest athletes are heading to South East Queensland, with the Obstacle Course Racing Community World Championships set to transform Ivory Rock at Peaks Crossing into an international battleground on May 21-22.

Recognised since its inception in 2014 as the premier independent championship for obstacle course racing, the event will draw elite competitors and everyday athletes from around the globe chasing a world title across mud, mountains and unforgiving terrain. And for the Ipswich region, it’s a chance to shine.

Set against the rugged backdrop of Ivory Rock, the championships will showcase the natural landscape that is quickly positioning Queensland as a destination for adventure sport.

Steep climbs, bushland trails and technical obstacles will test every element of an athlete’s ability including strength, endurance, agility and mental resilience.

At the heart of the program is the 15km championship, the original OCR world title featuring more than 40 obstacles spread across punishing terrain, widely regarded as the sport’s ultimate challenge, where only the most complete athletes prevail.

The shorter 3km course delivers a fast, explosive alternative, packing more than 15 obstacles into a high-intensity sprint that leaves little room for error.

Teams will also take centre stage in the 6km relay, where groups of three tackle a four-leg course combining speed, strength and technical skill before crossing the finish line together.

Adding a new dimension this year is the 80m obstacle sprint, a rapid-fire, spectator-friendly format inspired by its inclusion in the 2028 Summer Olympics modern pentathlon. Time trials will lead into a head-to-head final under lights, promising a dramatic finish.

With hundreds of competitors, support crews and spectators expected, the championships are set to deliver both sporting spectacle and economic benefit for the Ipswich region.
