AFTER weeks spent tracking down flaky pastries, towering burgers, woodfired pizzas, irresistible desserts and legendary pub meals, Roamin Rowan’s Hunt for the Best of Ipswich turned its attention to one of Australia’s greatest pub and café classics – the humble steak sandwich.
Whether it’s piled high with tender steak, caramelised onions, bacon, egg, beetroot and salad, dripping with smoky barbecue sauce, or served simply with perfectly cooked steak and fresh bread, the search was on for the sandwich locals swear by.
Every nomination helps shine a spotlight on the local businesses serving up some of the city’s best food.
The post attracted more than 14,000 Facebook views within the first 24 hours as hundreds of food lovers jumped online to back their favourites.
However, there could only be one winner.
Honourable mentions to Fernvale Pub, Mulgowie Pub and Yamanto Tavern Ale House but, for a second week in a row, the honours go to the Gibson family and the Walloon Tavern.
STEAKING THEIR CLAIM
Forget everything you thought you knew about steak sandwiches because the Walloon Hotel has taken the humble pub classic and given it a buttery, garlicky glow-up.
Instead of ordinary bread, this beauty is stacked between two thick slices of golden garlic bread.
Roamin Rowan: 14/10 – when it comes to the Gibsons, the team at Walloon Hotel, and what they do with pub food and hospitality, the rule book and score board is thrown out the window.
