Has Ipswich Nature Centre had its day?

FOR generations, the Ipswich Nature Centre has been one of the city’s favourite free family attractions, but as Ipswich races towards a very different future, it is worth asking an uncomfortable question: has the Nature Centre had its day?

Before somebody fires off an angry email, hear me out, as I’m not suggesting we bulldoze the place, pack up the bilbies and send the kangaroos elsewhere.

Quite the opposite in asking whether a city growing as quickly as Ipswich should be thinking much bigger about what this much-loved Queens Park institution could become.

And I ask that as a true local, a father and someone whose kids were wandering those boardwalks as recently as last week.

Like generations of Ipswich families, we have spent plenty of time there.

At a time when taking the kids almost anywhere can quickly turn into an expensive exercise, having a free wildlife attraction sitting in the middle of one of the city’s most beautiful parks is something worth protecting – but not wrapping it in cotton wool.

Nostalgia should never stop us asking whether something can be better, and Ipswich is no longer the city it was when the Nature Centre opened in 1936.

Recent investment makes it pretty clear the facility itself is not stuck in the past.

Because perhaps the answer to whether the Ipswich Nature Centre has “had its day” depends entirely on what we mean by the question.

If we are asking whether Ipswich still needs a free, accessible wildlife experience in the heart of Queens Park, the answer is clear every time you see another group of excited kids racing down the boardwalk.
