IPSWICH is attracting two million visitors a year and pumping $1 billion in outside spending into the local economy, but almost four in every five visitors are still leaving before nightfall.

The city’s booming day-trip market has emerged as both one of Ipswich tourism’s biggest successes and its next major challenge, with Ipswich City Council pushing to convert more visitors into overnight stays as new hotels, sporting infrastructure and major events come online.

Day trippers surged 18.1 per cent in the year to June 2024, while overnight visitors increased 11.4 per cent, continuing a dramatic recovery from the Covid-19 years.

But Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said about 79 per cent of the city’s visitation remained day trips.

“Encouraging visitors to stay longer is an important opportunity for our tourism industry,” Cr Harding said.

Council figures indicate the stakes extend well beyond tourism operators, with visitors from outside Ipswich contributing about $1 billion to the city’s $16.8 billion economy in the year to June 30, 2025.

That means the challenge is no longer simply getting people through the city gates, but convincing more of them to book a room, eat another meal and spend another day exploring Ipswich.

Council’s own tourism strategy has long targeted growth in visitor nights, length of stay and visitor expenditure, with Ipswich positioning itself as both a day-trip and short-break destination for the wider South East Queensland market.

A major piece of that puzzle is expected to arrive in late 2028 with the proposed $53 million Hilton Garden Inn in Ipswich Central.

The seven-storey development will add 160 rooms to the city’s accommodation supply, with construction expected to begin in late 2026.

Council has previously identified a shortage of short-term accommodation, with an audit finding Ipswich had 515 rooms – 310 fewer than projected to be required for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

Ipswich has no shortage of major drawcards – CMC Rocks Queensland, the Ipswich Cup, Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440, Winternationals, Spartan Trifecta Weekend and Ipswich Show bring visitors into the city, which is looking beyond events to sell itself as a destination.
