RESIDENTS are being warned to think carefully before planting fast-growing species near powerlines, after bamboo was linked to thousands of power outages across South East Queensland – including several in the Ipswich region.
Energex Area Manager Rick Madden said bamboo was one of the worst offenders because it grows rapidly and can conduct electricity, creating serious safety hazards.
“Bamboo grows incredibly quickly and can easily reach and touch powerlines,” Mr Madden said.
“What many people don’t realise is that bamboo can actually conduct electricity.
“We’ve had reports of people receiving electric shocks after bamboo came into contact with live mains.”
In the past year alone, more than 10,000 homes across South East Queensland have experienced power outages caused by bamboo touching powerlines.
Mr Madden said Ipswich had been no exception, with local outages linked to overgrown bamboo and other inappropriate plantings.
“It’s not just an inconvenience – it’s a real safety hazard,” he said.
“A single plant in the wrong spot can put entire streets in the dark and even endanger lives.”
Energex is urging Ipswich homeowners, gardeners and landscapers to think before they plant, especially when working near streets or powerlines.
“We want people to enjoy their gardens, but it’s important to choose the right plants for the right places,” Mr Madden said.
“There are plenty of safe options that won’t put your family or your neighbours at risk.”

Mr Madden said simple steps like avoiding bamboo and other fast-growing species near powerlines, regularly checking existing plants and using the Plant Smart guide could prevent dangerous situations and keep the lights on in Ipswich.
