Chaos remains: Drivers wait for bypass road to open up
READY TO OPEN?: A recent inspection of the Australia Avenue connection at Springfield this week revealed the only work that needed to be done was seemingly paper-work.

SPRINGFIELD motorists have been battling traffic chaos over the last few years as the building of the railway carpark station, the Lions AFL complex and the extension of the Greenbank arterial road all merged into one.

Those trying to get through to Springfield Railway station or leave Orion Shopping Centre have also been trapped by heavy school traffic during the weekday early morning and late afternoon periods.

While all this has been going on the Springfield City Group has been working on its extension of Australia Avenue which will give motorists immediate joy in avoiding the chaos.

Unfortunately, the important by-pass road remains shut.

Cr Paul Tully said when open, Australia Avenue will provide a critical link between Eden Station Drive and Southern Cross Circuit in Springfield Central, easing pressure on the surrounding road network and improving access to the Centenary Highway.

“Springfield City Group has advised council that major construction on Australia Avenue was nearing completion and the next steps include commissioning the traffic signals and dedication as a public road.

“An official date for the road opening has not yet been finalised by Springfield City Group, however it is a key priority for both Ipswich City Council and the developer,” he said.

The traffic lights at the intersection have now been operational for months.
