FOR generations, children have dreamed of running away to join the circus.
In Ipswich, that dream has become a reality without ever having to leave home thanks to the great work of Circus Ipswich
For almost a decade, the association has been providing young people with a place where they can build confidence, develop lifelong friendships and discover talents they never knew they possessed.
While audiences are often captivated by the spectacular juggling, acrobatics and aerial performances, the
organisation’s greatest achievement has been creating a welcoming community where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Established in 2017 by Meg Hooper, Circus Ipswich was founded on the belief that every child deserves the chance to succeed, regardless of their background, ability or previous experience.
Rather than focusing on competition or winning, the organisation encourages children to challenge themselves, celebrate personal achievements and embrace the process of learning, creating an environment where progress is measured by confidence and resilience rather than trophies or scoreboards.
For children who struggle to find their place in team environments or who simply want to explore their creativity, circus provides an opportunity to succeed on their own terms. Every skill, whether it is juggling, tumbling, balancing, aerial work or acrobatics, can be adapted to suit individual abilities.
“For young people in particular, circus builds resilience,” Dr Hooper said.
“It allows young people to take risks and know they are safe and supported.”
As Circus Ipswich approaches its 10-year anniversary in 2027, its influence can be measured not only through packed performances and growing enrolments, but through the hundreds of young people whose lives have been positively shaped by the program.
