THERE’S nothing iffy about the Ipswich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY).

This innovative competition for young local filmmakers began more than 10 years ago and has quietly built a solid platform to showcase young talent who would otherwise not get a chance for recognition.

While Ipswich might be a long way from Hollywood, every filmmaker must start somewhere, and we know Australia is no stranger to the Oscar stage.

Yes, there is YouTube and others, but entering a local competition is something special and unique.

Ipswich City Council must be congratulated for continuing this festival again in 2025. This year’s theme is Future in Focus.

The judges will evaluate elements such as storyline, editing techniques, use of effects and the theme.

Young people aged 7 to 25 can enter films no longer than five minutes through Council’s website by Friday August 15. For a more level playing field, the age groups for judging are divided into 7-11, 12-17 and 18-25 years.

IFFY offers a place for young filmmakers to express their creativity and gain credit for their work.

In this digital and internet era, fame and fortune can also happen overnight.

It is a far cry from my younger days when few families could afford an 8mm camera, let alone leave it in the hands of kids to play moviemaker.
