IPSWICH is gearing up for a weekend of horsepower, high-flying aerobatics and engineering marvels when the sixth annual Planes, Trains and Autos festival rolls into the city from May 2 to 4.

The popular event returns with an expanded program this year, headlined by the Fully Charged showcase at the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops in North Ipswich and a series of new events designed to bring even more power and spectacle to the festival.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the festival had grown into one of the city’s most loved events, celebrating the machines that have shaped transport through the decades.

“Residents and visitors can experience their favourite vehicles firsthand, whether it’s the raw power of a race car, the charm of a restored Mustang or the sleek design of a helicopter,” Mayor Harding said.

The centrepiece Fully Charged event will feature a range of displays, demonstrations and family-friendly activities.

Among the highlights will be the Freedom Formation, the largest formation aerobatic display team in the Southern Hemisphere.

Visitors will also have the chance to see engineering marvels up close, including the Bell 206 JetRanger helicopter, radio-controlled model aircraft, emergency service vehicles and race cars, all set against the heritage backdrop of the museum.

Mayor Harding said the venue itself was part of the experience, with the newly restored 130-year-old Signal Cabin offering visitors a glimpse into Ipswich’s industrial history and the city’s long association with rail.New events will debut at this year’s festival, including the 2 Days of Thunder and Diesel Assault race demonstrations, alongside Monster Machine Day, where modern heavy-duty vehicles will take centre stage.

Economic and Cultural Development Committee chair Councillor Pye Augustine said the festival continued to grow in popularity, attracting thousands each year.

“With almost 15,000 attendees last year, including more than 6500 at Fully Charged, Planes, Trains and Autos has delighted residents and drawn visitors to our city,” Cr Augustine said.

Festival favourites will also return in 2026, including Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway Swanbank Collier train rides, the Retro Picnic and the Grandchester Model Live Steam Train Association Running Day.

“Events like these bring opportunities for the Ipswich economy to grow while providing entertainment for everyone,” Cr Augustine said.
