IPSWICH residents are being encouraged to turn a simple handbag into a gift of hope this Christmas as Share the Dignity launches its annual It’s in the Bag appeal, aiming to collect 150,000 bags for women and girls doing it tough.

With the festive season approaching, local families, businesses, schools and community groups are being called on to help women and girls experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence, and financial hardship.

The nationwide campaign, running from November 6 to 22, invites residents to fill a new or pre-loved handbag in good condition with everyday essentials, period products, thoughtful gifts and a handwritten message of encouragement.

Completed bags can be dropped off at participating Bunnings Warehouse stores, making it an opportunity for the Ipswich community to give back in a practical and personal way.

Share the Dignity founder and Managing Director Rochelle Courtenay said volunteers played a vital role in ensuring donations reached those who needed them most.

“Every year, thousands of Australians choose to give a little kindness through It’s in the Bag, and it’s our incredible volunteers who help make sure those donations reach the women and girls who need them most,” Ms Courtenay said.

The 2026 appeal also marks 10 years of partnership between Share the Dignity and Bunnings Warehouse, with more than 1.1 million bags collected through stores nationwide during that time.

Last year, Australians donated 123,295 physical bags, while online contributions funded more than 30,000 additional bags for distribution through the charity’s network of community partners.

Ms Courtenay said even the smallest gesture could make a meaningful difference.

“A bag can provide practical essentials, but a handwritten note can make someone feel seen, remembered and cared for,” she said.
