MOTORSPORT fans and history buffs alike are revving up for one of Queensland’s most iconic automotive events – the Historic Leyburn Sprints, set to roar through the Southern Darling Downs on Saturday and Sunday, August 23 and 24.
Held annually in the tiny township of Leyburn, this thrilling event transforms the quiet country streets into a racetrack lined with vintage machines, passionate car lovers, and enthusiastic spectators.
The Sprints commemorate the 1949 Australian Grand Prix, which was held on an abandoned wartime airstrip just outside Leyburn – the first Grand Prix to be run in Queensland.
This year, over 200 historic, classic and performance cars are expected to compete in timed sprints through the 1km street circuit.
From pre-war specials and muscle cars to modern classics, the variety on display offers a living showcase of automotive evolution.
But the Leyburn Sprints are more than just about the racing. The weekend is packed with family-friendly activities, community spirit, and country hospitality. Highlights include:
- Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine: One of the state’s largest, featuring hundreds of pristine vehicles on display.
- Vintage Caravan Display: A charming collection of retro vans that adds to the nostalgic atmosphere.
- Live Music & Markets: Local entertainment, food trucks, market stalls, and children’s activities bring the town alive.
- Charity events and raffles: Supporting local organisations and celebrating Leyburn’s rich community roots.
The Historic Leyburn Sprints draw thousands of visitors each year and offer an unforgettable experience for all ages – whether you’re a lifelong revhead or simply enjoy stepping back in time.
Located just over two hours’ drive from Brisbane, Leyburn makes for a perfect weekend getaway.
Accommodation in and around the area books out fast, so plan early to enjoy small-town charm.
