IPSWICH boxing powerhouse Taylah Gentzen is closing in on a world title opportunity that could change the course of her career.
The 36-year-old is set to face Italy’s Martina Righi in a high-stakes showdown on December 19.
Gentzen will take on the European Super Featherweight champion for the IBF Interim Super Featherweight World Title at Fortitude Valley Music Hall, with the Ipswich fighter ranked No.2 in the IBF standings and Righi sitting at No.1.
The matchup puts two of the division’s leading contenders directly against each other, giving Gentzen a major opportunity to turn her impressive rise through the world rankings into championship success.
But the stakes could climb even higher before fight night.
If Alecia Baumgardner defeats Elif Nur Thuran in their scheduled bout on November 8, Gentzen’s December showdown would be elevated to the official IBF World Title, transforming an already significant contest into an opportunity to fight for the organisation’s full world championship.
There is another intriguing twist for Gentzen, who lost to Thuran by split decision in January.
Should Baumgardner lose and choose to remain at super lightweight, the winner of Gentzen’s clash with Righi is expected to become her mandatory challenger, potentially opening another pathway towards world title glory.
For Gentzen, the opportunity is the result of a calculated decision to change divisions and pursue the fights she believes can take her to the top.
The move represents unfamiliar territory for Gentzen, who has competed at lightweight and super lightweight during her professional career.
Away from the ring, Gentzen is also navigating a major life transition after being medically discharged from the air force.
While that marks the end of one significant chapter, it has done little to diminish her desire to succeed in boxing – Gentzen is determined to make the most of every chance that comes her way.
