WILLOWBANK Raceway produced another huge weekend of radial racing as the latest Kenda 660 event saw Australian records tumble and personal bests reset.
The weather forecast in the days leading up to the event looked far from ideal, but racers were rewarded with cool temperatures and a dry racing surface that proved perfect for making horsepower.
With the track in excellent condition, teams wasted little time taking advantage of the opportunity.
Some underestimated the traction in qualifying, sending their cars sky high, looking spectacular for the fans, what goes up must come down … and that is usually harder than it sounds with stiff suspension setups for drag racing, it’s not a very soft landing!
Some of the quickest radial racers in the country were on hand, including competitors who travelled from Western Australia to be part of the meeting.
The depth of the field was evident from the opening rounds, with strong performances across every class. Plenty of familiar faces with many new ones to balance the fields including new comer Seth Lansdowne from the Spot on Performance camp; his first time racing at the event and taking home the runner up in Radial Rebels.
As the weekend unfolded, the timing boards lit up with a string of personal bests and Australian records. Teams continued to refine their combinations as conditions improved, producing some of the quickest radial passes seen at Willowbank in recent years. John Ricca in his RPM Race Parts Melbourne Camaro came out swinging with consistent low 3.50s, but the magic 3.49 came in the semi-finals, making it the first radial in Australia in the 40s.
The Kenda 660 series continues to attract Australia’s best radial racers and this event was another reminder of why it has become one of the standout meetings on the drag racing calendar.
Fast cars, favourable conditions and a quality racing surface combined to create a memorable weekend for competitors and fans alike.
