IPSWICH has produced sporting champions across generations, and now the time has come to recognise their achievements with an Ipswich Sporting Hall of Fame that would celebrate the Legends that have put our city on the Map.
Today’s front page goes into detail on how the city can get this up and running and which champions could be inducted as the first three recipients.
Ipswich has a proud sporting history, producing champions who have represented Queensland and Australia with distinction.
The time has arrived for our city to recognise these achievements with an Ipswich Sporting Hall of Fame, celebrating the athletes who have helped put our region on the sporting map.
Rugby league would provide a long list of worthy candidates, headed by the legendary Allan Langer, Ali Brigginshaw and the Walters brothers, Kevin, Kerrod and Steve.
Other greats, including Gary Parcell, Noel Kelly and Dud Beattie, would also deserve serious consideration for their contributions to the game.
Rugby union has produced the McLean brothers, Paul and Jeff, while cricket boasts international stars Shane Watson and Craig McDermott.
Hockey has given us Arthur Busch and Tammy Cole, tennis has produced former world number one and Australian sporting icon Ash Barty, while soccer champions from the Kitching and Nunn families have also left their mark.
And that is just the beginning.
From athletics and cycling to boxing and baseball plus numerous other sports, Ipswich has produced countless champions whose achievements deserve recognition.
Clear criteria must be established to ensure Hall of Fame inductees are selected fairly, recognising outstanding achievements, sporting excellence, longevity, and their contribution to the city.
If I had to select the first three inductees, after plenty of careful thought, my choices would be Allan Langer, Ash Barty and Shane Watson. Each has achieved greatness in their chosen sport and become a household name.
An Ipswich Sporting Hall of Fame would not simply celebrate past achievements; it would preserve our sporting heritage and inspire future generations to dream big and make our city proud.
